CHAPTER 16 THE LEADER AS A COACH

In this blog discussion will be all about the leader as a coach, how to lead effectively, and also what employers want in employees and what an employee look for at a workplace.

Types of Coaches or Leaders-

Shamans:

Heal through the use of personal power and focus the attention of their followers on themselves

Have power, energy, and commitment, which they use to energize others

Priests:

Claim power through office and are agents of omnipotent authority

Establish structure, order, and continuity

Operate in a hierarchy with roles and duties in a hierarchical ladder

Elected leaders:

Undergo trials, self-transformation, training, or some other rite to achieve their positions

Derive power not only from their own experience but also from the mandate of their followers

Missionaries:

Are goal directed

Teach out of personal conviction, believing in certain ideals and seeing it as a duty to pass on these ideals to others

Mystic healers:

Seek the source of illness and health in the follower’s personality

Try to discover the statue in the marble and seek to find what can be created from the raw material

Require unselfish motivation and considerable sensitivity, as well as flexibility to vary treatment according to the nature and needs of each individual, to be successful.

Principles of Developing Others –

  • Have a respectful attitude
  • Build self-esteem
  • Use the correct medium or combination of techniques
  • Use coaching versus judging in developing people, and consider purpose, timing, focus, and process
  • Practice, which builds proficiency.

The Four Levels Approach to Measure Learning Effectiveness-

Level one

Data are usually gathered by questionnaires administered at the conclusion of a training program

Participant satisfaction is measured, and content, delivery, and the like are evaluated

Level two

Learning is measured in terms of increased knowledge, skill, or attitude

Methods range from paper-and-pencil tests to job demonstrations

Level three

Question whether learners are using new knowledge, skills, and attitudes back at work is answered

Observation, surveys, and interviews are used

Level four

Focus is on business results

Return on investment is measured


Coaching for Success-

  • Popular approach to leadership development is individualized coaching to address areas for improvement
  • Coaches use a variety of resources for developing leaders, including helpful books
  • Identifying coaching needs as early as possible is an important way to strengthen the leadership bench and promote dramatic improvement
  • Effective method is to use successful leaders in the later stages of their careers to mentor and develop the next generation of leaders

Best Practices in Coaching and Mentoring-

  • Person being coached or mentored must want to improve
  • Formal assessment of strengths and weaknesses is valuable
  • Some behaviors cannot be changed
  • Practice is critical for success
  • Accountability for effort must be maintained.

What Employers Want in an Employee-

Employees who are honest

Need for trust is paramount because the employer relies on the employee to serve its customers, protect its property, and uphold its reputation

Employees who will take initiative and be self-starters

Employees with good problem-solving ability, including technical knowledge and skills, and communication skills

Employees with creative responses to setbacks and obstacles, a high-attitude-low-maintenance approach to work, leadership potential, and the ability to get along well with others

What Employees Want in a Company-

  • Clarity of work assignment and good work tools and supplies
  • Challenge in one’s area of expertise
  • Recognition for one’s accomplishments
  • Opportunity to grow and respect for one’s opinions
  • Mission that motivates
  • Feedback on performance
  • Positive social interactions and pride in a group.

The Peak-Performance Process-

  • Decide what is important to oneself
  • Picture the completed thing
  • Relax mentally and physically
  • Let the image of the situation come to mind
  • Visualize handling the situation in precisely the manner desired
  • Visualize handling one or two unexpected aspects of the situation
  • Visualize a positive outcome
  • Take action.
